Located in huge cauldron from an extinct volcano (or possibly from erosion,) the Nun’s Valley (Curral das Freiras) was the safe have for the Santa Clara Convent Nuns,  the children from their orphanage, and their convent’s treasure as they escaped marauding pirates invading nearby Funchal, Madeira. The parishes patron seat is Nossa Senhora do Livramento (English: Our Lady of Alleviation), and annually celebrates a festival in Her honor on the last Sunday of August.
