Three days before Christmas an opportunity arose. Sunshine, calm winds and no last-minute shoppers. The frozen banks of the Poudre River shimmered in the early winter sun. Here and there pockets of open water tease with the prospect of finding trout.
Throughout the afternoon I found hungry trout willing to take a rainbow warrior along with a couple other small midges. My Elkhorn 3 wt. bent into a question mark more than 15 times.
The quiet babble of the river, the soft crunch of snow underfoot and the gentle tug of several trout closed out my fly fishing for 2012. I look forward to more of the same in the new year ahead.
